The ancient city of Sukhothai is a visual feast of magnificent ruins. It was the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam in the 13th and 14th centuries and Sukhothai Historical Park ? a place with numerous sites of historical interest ? has been made into a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The province is located in the valley of the Yom River on the lower edge of the northern region, 427 kilometres north of Bangkok and is considered the cradle of Thai civilization. Other interesting places include Ramkhamhaeng National Museum, Ramkhamhaeng National Park, Sri Satchanalai National Park, and The Royal Palace and Wat Mahathat. Today the ruined city is situated among rolling green hills and tranquil lotus ponds and offers a glimpse of the culture and architectural wonders of a bygone civilization.
