Rarotonga is the most populous island in the Cook Islands and also one of the top tourist destinations. Cook Islands' Parliament buildings, as well as the international airport, are located on Rarotonga. The island is surrounded by a lagoon, which extends several hundred yards (meters) to the reef. The south-east part of the island is the most popular with tourists because it is suitable for swimming, snorkelling and boating. With its jagged peaks and deep valleys, fertile slopes and sparkling aquamarine lagoon, Rartonga comes pretty close to the archetype image of paradise.
